Visiting a Prep class

Welcoming committee greets Father General

Fr General’s Visit

The Superior General of the Society of Jesus (‘Father General’) visited Gonzaga on June 5th 1992.
Due at precisely 9.35, Fr Peter Hans Kolvenbach SJ arrived on foot from the College of
Industrial Relaions ten seconds early. His visit was scheduled to last exactly iteen minutes,
during which he wished to meet as many of the staf as possible, see some of the pupils, and
tour part of the college.
Accompanied by the Irish Provincial and the Assistant General with responsibility for
Western Europe, he greeted the Gonzaga welcoming group most warmly. A Dutchman by birth,
he spoke luent English and his comments as he posed for photographs were both wity and
incisive. He had obviously been well briefed on Gonzaga’s history and culture.
He visited Prep 1, where Maire O’Kelly was teaching her last group as class teacher. Thence
to the Hall, where the Senior School were siing their summer exams, and to the stafroom
where teachers were slaving over correcions.
Ater a moment of quiet prayer and relecion in the new St Aloysius Prayer Room, it was
handshakes, adieus and he was gone. It was exactly 9.50 a.m. Fr Peter Hans Kolvenbach had
visited Gonzaga College.
