GONZAGA EARNS ITS GONZAGA AT SIXTY: A WORK IN PROGRESS
GREEN FLAG
Gonzaga College for the irst ime in 60
years has recognized the necessity for
sense, responsibilty and proporion in
our aitude to the environment. Our
negaive impact on the environment
was growing year by year with litle or
no efort to curtail it and arising from
a Junior Ceriicate C.S.P.E project we
quickly noiced that this aitude was
no longer acceptable and that reform
was needed.
Social responsibilty, courageous
leadership and growth of the
individual within a community are
long standing Jesuit tradiions and we
needed to make a commitment, as
the community of Gonzaga, to adhere
to these standards, therefore we
assembled our commitee and began
to tackle the problem.
Two years later we proudly ly our
Green Flag awarded by ‘An Taisce’,

award scheme that promotes and MacConville, Bernadete Rooney (Administrator), Siobhan McNamara
acknowledges long-term, whole and students Hugh O’Flanagan and Ben McRedmond, then in Fourth
Year, the two driving forces behind the Green iniiaive. Fr.Rector, Myles
school acion for the environment. O’Reilly SJ, is pictured third from let.
This was the most intrinsic element
to our campaign, it needed to be a
long-term objecive involving each
and every aspect of the school. Ater
compleing the ‘Liter and Waste’
theme, we now move onto ‘Energy’ an
area where exciing and huge change
can be made.
An on-going process of educaion
and encouragement throughout
the College community, regarding
the sustaining of our environment,
are of paramount importance to us.
We have succeeded far beyond our
expectaions, we have made real
change and we are one step closer to a
truly ‘green’ Gonzaga.
