RUGBY
A chuffed looking Rugby football has been central to the sporing aciviies of the college from the very beginning.
Bobby Byrne Paricipaion and enjoyment are the main focus of our coaching philosophy throughout the
school and although schools rugby has become more compeiive over the years we have been
conscious that rugby is only a small part of the students’ overall educaion.
There are many who have contributed to the development of rugby in the school over the
years. Anthony Ensor’s memory of the 1960ies lists some of the earliest, and Charles Lysaght has
recorded elsewhere how ‘that great gentleman, Eugene Davy, who had played for Ireland at out-
half for many seasons, gave of his ime to ofer us coaching’.
Noel McCarthy and Kevin Whirdy both made very signiicant contribuions to the
development of rugby in Gonzaga for a period of almost 30 years. Kevin coached the JCT with Fr
Dermot Murray in the early 70s and later joined Noel at senior level and with a limited number
of students at their disposal they always managed to produce very spirited and compeiive
cup teams. Paddy Madigan (Snr) contributed generously for a number of years in the 1980s
