60 Sixty years from its foundaion, Gonzaga can claim to have gained recogniion for its teams and
its individual sportsmen both at home and internaionally.
Sport has seen dramaic development in the College. The days when it was unacceptable
to play rugby with Protestant schools and unthinkable to indulge in the naional games are
replaced by a truly catholic involvement in sports of all kinds.
Gonzaga rugby teams oten achieve beyond their weight in schools compeiions, and the list
of our players at provincial, club and naional level is growing all the ime. Tennis and cricket
lourish, and internaional tennis players and cricket players are listed among the contributors
to this book. School swimmers have an outstanding record of achievements, and our athletes
have won disincion at Leinster meets. For more than a decade the skills learned in Gaelic
clubs have been evident in some of our most skilled rugby players, and two current students
have won posiions on junior Dublin sides in hurling; hurling became a feature of school life
this summer, adding another possibility for boys already long experienced at Dublin inter-
school Gaelic football blitzes – of which we have emerged as winners more than once.
Such an expansion of sporing acivity is the result of staf iniiaive and commitment over
many years, oten with the invaluable assistance and support of parents. The result is an
opportunity for many, many students to paricipate in a sporing acivity. Badminton, table-
tennis, golf, frisbee have all been iniiated, fostered or made possible as the result of staf
enthusiasm and efort over recent years.
