GONZAGA AT SIXTY: A WORK IN PROGRESS

Schools Championships where upwards of 200 schools are represented every year.
In the following eleven years, Gonzaga teams had outstanding success at Leinster and
Irish Schools Swimming Championships. Our Relay teams dominated Schools Championships,
winning Senior, Intermediate and Junior Leinster and Irish Schools Cups, repeatedly making new
provincial and naional records.
In addiion Gonzaga’s students have earned a respected reputaion compeing for their
clubs at Provincial, Naional and Internaional Championships. Their successes are built on
tremendous dedicaion to training and pracice. A compeiive swimmer rises at 5:00 a.m. for a
5,000m - 6,000m one-and-a-half hour training session before school followed by another 4,000m
- 5,000m one-and-a-half hour training session ater school at least four days a week, every week
for eleven months of the year. It requires serious personal and family commitment.
The gruelling training is balanced, however, by the enjoyment to be got from away trips for
compeiions, at summer training camps, and from the friendships made with other swimmers
(boys and girls) from clubs everywhere, both home and abroad.
