GONZAGA AT SIXTY: A WORK IN PROGRESS

Murphy, Patrick Potts, Oliver O’Brien, Daniel McNelis. Kneeling (L to R): David Murray, Mark
Stafford, Laurence Duffy, Sean Dingle

Gerry always took the ime and trouble to talk to me about my bowling ater each encounter,
constantly encouraging and quietly imparing sound cricket wisdom and advice. This is the mark
of the man – it is that sincere interest that he had shown in my cricket as a youthful member of
the opposiion that has beneited young cricketers in Gonzaga throughout the years.
It is interesing to note that Gerry’s irst signiicant mark on schools cricket in Leinster was
in 1945, when he led St. Mary’s College to victory in the inal of the Leinster Schools Junior Cup.
This was followed up in 2009 when, following abandonment of the inal ater repeated inclement
weather, Gonzaga College shared the Leinster Schools Senior Cup with Belvedere College. This
was a great achievement for all concerned but in paricular for Gerry – sill making his mark on
Leinster schools cricket some sixty-four years later!
All who have been involved in Gonzaga cricket over the years have greatly appreciated
Gerry’s great coaching, enthusiasm, wisdom, character and decency throughout – his has truly
been a labour of love.
