Ater leaving Gonzaga (1992) I entered UCD, inishing in 1996 with a joint honours degree in Mathemaical
Denis Cusack
in class Physics and Experimental Physics. I let Ireland that autumn to start the Ph.D. program in physics in Cornell
University (Ithaca, New York---about 300 km from New York City), where I focussed on computer simulaions
of materials. In 2002 I moved back to Europe, Denmark speciically, to do a post-doc at the Technical University
of Denmark (DTU) which is north of Copenhagen. There my work focussed on mechanical properies of
mechanical glasses. Ater that (2005) I moved to Roskilde University (sill in the Copenhagen area), sill as a
post-doc, but I am about to become a “lecturer”. My job there has involved both research (a slight shit of
focus, to the dynamics of glass-forming liquids) and teaching, which I love very much.
If personal stuf is of relevance: part of the reason for coninuing to stay in Denmark is (probably not
surprisingly) my girlfriend Pia, who is also a scienist (food science). We will be married this July, one week
ater our son Philip has his irst birthday. We live on the South side of Copenhagen.
My interest in physics probably predates my ime in Gonzaga, but I remember David Keenahan’s Leaving
Cert Physics class with fondness – a relaxed classroom atmosphere that promoted discussion, and similarly
interested classmates (if not quite sharing my passion). I should also menion Denis Cusack’s Maths class, since
my work involved maths constantly. I think the aitude he communicated regarding how to understand concepts
and how to atack problems coninues to be at the center of how I think of mathemaics (in fact recent lectures I
gave about how to visualize concepts in linear algebra was based on how I learned it from him for the irst ime).
