THE KEANE COLLECTION
Above: some of the books
in the Keane Collection. Fr Eddie Keane collected a large number of
Below: Tim Hamilton, SJ classical texts over his teaching life. Many
contain the standard commentaries by
19 century scholars, which have not been
th
surpassed or supplanted. He also let muliple
copies of texts for classroom use; the numbers
indicate the size of classes in Lain and Greek
in other days. The quality of the commentaries
relects the level of grammaical understanding

required of students.
Siobhan McNamara, the College Librarian,
has recently allocated one of the enclosed
reading rooms in the new library to the storing
of Eddie’s texts. Those who will use them are
few, but there is currently a core group of
classicists with more than adequate ability who
will do so.
The odd second generaion Greek student
has already stumbled, eyes wide, upon the
signature of his father in a dog-eared volume.
And the large Liddell and Scot lexicon in use is
inscribed with the name of Tim Hamilton, SJ
